Introduces Wireless LAN Access Point with ISDN Routing
Boston, MA, January 26, 2000 -- Zoom Telephonics, Inc.
has begun shipping the ZoomAir AP128, a wireless access point
with ISDN routing. The ZoomAir AP128 is the first product
release in a family of Zoom products that distribute high-speed
Internet connections to multiple computers using wireless
local area networking.
The ZoomAir AP128 creates a
wireless network connection to any existing Ethernet network,
with wireless networking speeds of 2 Mbps using the current
802.11 DSSS standard. The AP128 features a unique architecture
that allows easy upgrades. An 11 Mbps 802.11 DSSS upgrade
will be available later this year. Wireless network clients
communicate with the AP128 using ZoomAir network interface
cards or any other 802.11 DSSS compatible product.
The AP128 is also an Internet Protocol (IP) router providing
128 Kbps ISDN connections that can be used to connect multiple
LANs and to provide shared Internet access to wired and wireless
clients. Network Address Translation (NAT) allows multiple
users to share a single IP address and Internet account. Other
Wide Area Networking features of the ZoomAir AP128 include
remote LAN access, dial-on-demand and data-over-voice ISDN
connections, and firewall security. Firewall security options
include CHAP/PAP, RADIUS, packet filtering, and callback.
"The ZoomAir AP128 is an example of our strong
commitment to the integration of Internet access and easily-installed
local area networking," said Frank Manning, Zoom's President.
"Wireless networking is important to this strategy, and
we will continue to extend our broad line of wireless LAN
products with 11 Mbps products, wireless bridges, and options
for ADSL and cable modems. We are determined to reach critical
mass in our broadband and advanced networking product lines,
to provide outstanding solutions in these high-growth areas
for our end-users, value-added resellers, access providers,
and high-volume retailers."
Zoom includes WebManage,
an easy-to-use, HTML-based management software, with the AP128.
WebManage allows the remote configuration and management of
a ZoomAir AP128 over the Internet using any Web browser software.
Administration of the LAN is further simplified by dynamic
Host Control Protocol (DHCP), which automatically assigns
IP addresses to client computers.
The ZoomAir AP128
includes a detachable dipole antenna that provides coverage
to wireless clients within 1000 feet (300 meters) in an unobstructed
environment, or 300 feet (90 meters) in a typical indoor office
environment with modular workstations. Optional ZoomAir omni-directional
and directional antennas can be used to extend range up to
1 mile. The estimated retail price of the ZoomAir AP128 is
