Zoom™
Ethernet Cable Modem Awarded @Home® Level 2 Approval
Approval dramatically increases
Zoom's worldwide sales opportunities
Boston, MA, June 22, 2001 - Zoom Telephonics, Inc.
(NASDAQ: ZOOM),
a leading producer of dial-up and broadband modems, announced
today that the Zoom Ethernet CableModem Model 5011 has been
awarded @Home ® Level 2 Approval from Excite@Home (NASDAQ:
ATHM), The Leader in Broadbandsm. The @Home high-speed cable
Internet service is available in hundreds of cities throughout
the US, Canada, Australia and Japan. @Home is currently used
by more than 3 million cable modem users through Excite@Home's
affiliate cable service providers. "This should
really open up the global market for Zoom," said Frank
Manning, Zoom's President and CEO. "All of the US-based
cable service providers in the Excite@Home network, including
AT&T Broadband, Charter, Comcast and Cox, as well as those
providers in other countries that use the CableLabs DOCSIS
specification, will be able to confidently provide high-speed
data service to people using the Zoom Ethernet cable modem."
Zoom sells its cable modems directly to cable service
providers, who then supply the cable modems to customers as
part of their broadband Internet access. In addition, many
cable service providers allow their customers to use @Home
Level 2 Approved cable modems purchased from retailers. Because
the cable service provider is not burdened with the equipment
cost of supplying the cable modem, savings can be passed along
to the customer. In partnership with cable companies,
Zoom plans to use its relationships with retailers to launch
marketing programs that will cross-promote Zoom cable modems
with signing up new customers. The @Home Level 2 Approval
means that Zoom's 5011 Ethernet cable modem complies with
broad industry standards for interoperability, compatibility
and performance. The @Home Level 2 Approval confirms the successful
integration, interoperability and provisioning of Zoom's 5011
Ethernet cable modem within the Excite@Home DOCSIS network
environment. The Zoom 5011 Ethernet cable modem successfully
passed a rigorous range of tests in the areas of throughput,
interoperability and reliability when combined with the technology
used by Excite@Home. This is the second Zoom cable
modem to be approved for use on Excite@Home's high-speed data
network. On May 16, 2001 Zoom announced that the Zoom PCI
CableModem Model 5001 was approved with @Home Conditional
Level 2 Approval. Zoom's Ethernet, PCI cable and USB
cable modems have been awarded Cable Television Laboratories,
Inc.'s CableLabs® Certified™ status.
