Zoom/Access IG and IG Plus Lower Cost of Internet Access For
Networked Offices Boston, MA,
November 9, 1998 - Zoom Telephonics (NASDAQ: ZOOM),
a leading producer of wide-area network solutions, today announced
a line of complete low-cost solutions for sharing access to
the Internet. The Zoom/Access IG product family offers
a range of economical solutions for connecting LAN users to
the Internet. Using a 128 Kbps ISDN dial-up, ISDL, or dedicated
Centrex ISDN line, all LAN users can share access to the Internet.
Sharing the connection eliminates the need for multiple ISP
accounts, individual modems, or multiple phone lines, dramatically
reducing the overall access costs. "The IG and
IG Plus provide a simpler and more cost-effective means for
small businesses to manage Internet access," said Frank
Manning, Zoom's President and CEO. "Systems administrators
can restrict Internet access by user, time, Internet site,
or service." The Zoom/Access IG enables up to
five LAN users to concurrently access the Internet. The Zoom/Access
IG Plus provides Internet access to an unlimited number of
concurrent users, and includes a mail server with 15 mailboxes
that is upgradeable to an unlimited number of mailboxes. In
addition, the Zoom/Access IG can be upgraded to the IG Plus
version. "The small business demands a complete
solution to deliver flexible, managed access to the Internet,
one that is easy to install, configure and use," said
Ted Mina, Zoom's Business Products manager. "The IG products
deliver on these requirements and more." All Zoom/Access
IG products ship with an ISDN card, the Internet LanBridge
and MailBridge software from Virtual Motion, an ISDN installation
utility, and on-line help. Internet access with the
Zoom/Access IG requires installing the included ISDN terminal
adapter and gateway software on a non-dedicated PC server
running Microsoft Windows® 98, 95 or NT; and installing
an included TCP/IP redirector on client PCs. Zoom/Access IG
gateway software automatically establishes high-speed Internet
connection of LAN PC users on demand. The Zoom/Access
IG requires only one IP address for the server PC (static
or dynamic) for all LAN users to share. This configuration
allows the use of only one low-cost "individual"
dial-up ISP account for the entire LAN. Zoom/Access IG works
over any LAN running TCP/IP, IPX, or NetBIOS. In addition
to providing Internet access to an unlimited number of concurrent
PC LAN users, the Zoom/Access IG Plus comes with a mail server
that enables the sending and receiving of e-mail between LAN
users and the Internet. LAN users retrieve their e-mail from
the mail server using any POP3-compliant e-mail application
software. The IG mail server is compatible with many
LAN-based e-mail products, such as Microsoft Exchange, Novell
GroupWide, Lotus Notes or cc:Mail. Users send and receive
e-mail using their standard LAN e-mail application.
With its access control and management features, the Zoom/Access
IG product family provides security and control over unauthorized
access. The Zoom/Access IG product family provides a natural
firewall against outside intruders. Since the server PC is
the only machine that is running TCP/IP with an assigned IP
address, none of the LAN file servers or user PC clients are
directly accessible from the Internet. Client PC Access can
be controlled based on the type of application, by Internet
site, and by how long a user can access the Internet.
