Zoom
Telephonics Demonstrates Cable Modems With USB and "No-New-Wires"
Networking At CCTA Western Show
Zoom Broadband Solution Includes
Phoneline and Wireless LAN Options
Boston, MA, December 13, 1999 -- Zoom Telephonics,
Inc. (NASDAQ: ZOOM) is demonstrating for the first time cable
modems that incorporate networking with "no-new-wires"
technology and easy installation using a Universal Serial
Bus (USB) port. The products will be displayed at the CCTA
(California Cable Television Association) Western Show, December
15-17, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The cable modems
will be exhibited in the Zoom booth (#4618) and at the show's
CableNET '99 educational showcase. CableNET is an annual exhibition
of the latest in broadband cable technology. The Zoom
cable modems being demonstrated install on the high-speed
USB or 10BaseT port of a desktop or laptop computer. One of
the models in the demonstration distributes broadband Internet
data using home phoneline wiring or a wireless LAN (Local
Area Network) link to other wireless-equipped devices. The
Zoom exhibit will demonstrate how this technology simplifies
installation and increases user satisfaction by providing
convenient data distribution throughout a home or business.
In Zoom's opinion, wireless LAN technology will be key
in addressing the rapid growth anticipated in home and small
business networking. According to Mike Wolf, Senior Home Networking
Analyst for Cahners In-Stat Group, "At the end of 1999,
an estimated 20 million multi-PC households in the United
States combined with the exploding demand for broadband Internet
services make home networking an extremely compelling proposition
for many consumers." Zoom currently markets a
line of 802.11 DSSS (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum) standard
wireless LAN products under the ZoomAir™ name. A slot
on the front panel of a networked Zoom cable modem accommodates
a ZoomAir PCMCIA Network Interface Card that enables the unit's
wireless networking feature. Zoom's advanced cable modem also
includes both Home Phoneline (Home PNA) and standard Ethernet
10BaseT networking options. The home phoneline networking
option allows the modem to be plugged into any RJ-11 phone
jack in a residence to distribute data to any Home PNA enabled
PC in the home. Other features of the Zoom cable modem
with networking include:
- DOCSIS 1.0 based with a software upgrade to DOCSIS 1.1
- Easy user installation using either a USB interface or
10BaseT and a software installation wizard
- WebManage™ software, which allows remote configuration
and support of the local area networking features using
any Web browser
The Zoom cable modem line also includes a lower cost, DOCSIS
based model with a 10BaseT interface only. About
