Saving Your ZoomAir Access Point Key
v2.32 ZoomAir Access Point Driver is avaliable for downloading.
Before installing this driver set, be sure to save/protect
your "ZoomAir.key" file. You can do this in two ways. The first
is to place on a clean floppy disk the ZoomAir.key" file for
reloading after upgrading. The second is to first save on a
separate floppy (or on your hard disk) the supplied "ZoomAir.key" file
from Disk 1 of this latest version thus eliminating the chance
of overwriting this enabling file. We recommend extra caution
and by doing both.
Uninstalling an Old Version of ZoomAir
here are three main steps in uninstalling ZoomAir:
- Record your current network settings.
- Remove the ZoomAir drivers.
- Restore your network settings.
Record Your Current Network Settings
When ZoomAir drivers are removed from the computer, certain
network settings are lost. Follow these steps to create a record
of your settings to use as a guide in restoring the settings.
- Click on Start | Run. Type the following command:
Windows 95/98: winipcfg /all /batch \ipconfig.txt
Windows NT 4.0: winipcfg /all > \ipconfig.txt
and press Enter or click on OK.
- This will create a text file, ipconfig.txt, in
the computer's root directory. The file will contain information
about the computer's IP address, subnet mask, default gateway,
and other current information about network settings.
Double-clicking on the filename in Windows Explorer
will allow the file to be viewed in Notepad or Wordpad
and printed out for future reference in re-entering
network settings.
Remove the ZoomAir Drivers
Follow these steps to uninstall the ZoomAir drivers.
- Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel. In
the Control Panel, double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
- Scroll down to and highlight the ZoomAir entry. Click
on the Add/Remove button. Follow the instructions
on-screen.
- After the uninstall is complete, you can remove the ZoomAir
PC Card from its slot.
Restore Your Network Settings
Uninstalling ZoomAir drivers may also delete some of your
network settings. If you are installing another ZoomAir device,
the installation procedure should take care of restoring the
settings. If you are installing another networking device,
you can restore the settings in the Network control panel.
You may first want to print out the information you recorded
in the ipconfig.txt file. Then consult the Windows Help
file for detailed instructions for setting up networks; look
in the Help Index under Networks and Setting
up. |

Installing v2.3X ZoomAir Software Access Point Driver
for Windows 95 and Windows 98
Installing your ZoomAir Wireless PC Card in a Windows 95
or Windows 98 computer is a three-step process:
- With your PC off, insert the card (assumed already installed).
- Install the drivers.
- Run the ZoomAir setup software.
Note: If you are installing ZoomAir on a computer that
has a previous version, first see "Uninstalling An Old Version
of ZoomAir". Be sure to record your previous SSID, channel,
and WEP information as needed.
Install the Drivers
- Turn on the computer. As the computer starts, an installation
Wizard will ask you for a diskette.
- Insert the first floppy diskette (labeled Disk 1)
in the appropriate drive. Click on Next. Windows will
scan the computer's drives and report that it has found the
driver. Click on Finish.
- You may be asked for Computer and Workgroup information
if you do not already have a network installed in this computer.
The Computer name should be unique; the Workgroup name should
normally be the same for everyone on the LAN.
- The Wizard may ask you for a file, LaunchAp.Exe,
on the Windows installation disks. This program is located
on your ZoomAir diskette. In the location text box, simply
type the drive letter of your ZoomAir diskette (typically a:).
Click on OK.
- The Wizard may ask you once again for a Windows installation
diskette or the Windows installation CD. If so, insert the
diskette or CD and type in its location. Be sure to
use the Windows installation software that came with this
particular computer. Click on OK.
- At the end of this process, you may be asked to restart
the computer. Do this, even if you are not asked to:
- Shut down the computer. Remove any floppy diskette
that may be in the drive; then restart the computer.
Run the ZoomAir Setup Program
As the computer restarts, you will be taken through the steps
to run the ZoomAir setup program. Follow these steps: - You
will be asked to insert the ZoomAir installation CD or Disk
1 from the set of installation floppies. Insert
the diskette as needed and click on Retry.
- Licensing information will appear for you to read and accept.
- You will be asked to type in a unique SSID (Service
Set Identifier), which is a name for your wireless network.
- If you are adding an Access Point to an existing
wireless network, or converting a client to an
Access Point, you can use the existing SSID.
- If this is a new installation
and you are sure your network
will not be near any other ZoomAir
wireless
networks, you can accept the default. Otherwise
enter a word or phrase.
This identifier must be the same for all
computers that will be in the same wireless
network. Members of your network should regard
the SSID as a password and keep it secret.
The SSID is case-sensitive; you must use capital
and lower-case letters in the same way for
all ZoomAir units. If reinstalling ZoomAir,
use the SSID as previously established.
- You will be asked to identify the network card on the computer.
Select the card that is connected to the wired portion of
the LAN (if any) and click on OK.
- A Network Configuration dialog box may appear briefly.
Do not enter information into it; the Setup program will
take care of this.
- The TCP/IP Setup dialog box will appear asking if
there is a DHCP Server on the network. Click on No.
Adding IP Addresses
If your network uses the TCP/IP protocol, you need to add
IP Addresses to the Network setup for each ZoomAir Wireless
LAN computer, including the Access Point.
For a wireless network that will connect to a wired network,
your network administrator can give you the addresses to use.
If you are setting up a wireless-only network with an Access
Point, you can set the IP address as follows: - Go
to the Network control panel: Right-click on Network
Neighborhood and then on Properties.
- Click on the entry for TCP/IP -> Zoom Telephonics 802.11
- PCMCIA Adapter.
- Click on Properties and then on the IP Address tab
if it is not already selected. See the following illustration.
- Click on Specify an IP Address and then enter the IP
Address and Subnet Mask. For a private network
like a LAN, you can use almost any numbers for the IP address.
However, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)
has designated certain blocks of numbers for private networks
so that they do not conflict with Internet addresses.
Unless your network administrator tells you otherwise,
you can use the following:
IP Address-192.168.0.1 for the Access Point,
and 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.253 for the wireless
clients.
Note that the first three groups of numbers (192.186.0)
must be the same for every member of the network and
that the final number (1 through 253) must be unique
for each member of the network.
Subnet Mask-Use the same number, 255.255.255.0,
for all members.
- When you are finished, click on OK and then on OK in
the Network dialog box. If you are asked if you want
to restart the computer, click on Yes. You may be
asked for the installation CD for the operating system; if
so, insert the CD for the operating system that matches the
computer you are working on.
After the computer has restarted, you should see an icon for the ZoomAir Card
in the system tray (at the right-hand end of the taskbar). The icon may take
up to 30 seconds to appear; it looks like a small computer monitor. This
icon may be red or green depending on whether the ZoomAir PC Card is linked
with another client.
